The Island's restaurants, pubs and cafes are all within close distance of each other, quite a few of which being set around a picturesque square in the Village centre.
The Beangoose Restaurant The Marketplace, Holy Island, Northumberland - 01289 389 083
Perhaps the Restaurant with the best reputation for it's food on the Island is the oddly named Beangoose Restaurant. It is an award-winning restaurant that only uses the best local, freshly prepared, organic ingredients and has been recommended in Countryfile Magazine. It has become somewhat famous locally for the stunning quality and flavour of their locally caught lobster dishes. Please note that they are open from May until the end of October, so if you are visiting off-season you will need to choose from one of the places to eat below.
The Crown and Anchor The Marketplace, Holy Island, Northumberland - 01289 389215
This Public House gets a mention straight away for two wonderful reasons. The first being it is the only locally run Pub/Hotel on the Island and it is also the only bar on the Island that allow dogs inside. If you've come walking with our pooch, this is definitely the place to have a drink and a bite to eat. Good value home-cooked meals are on offer, using local ingredients wherever possible and are also available to take away at a discounted price. They also have a large beer garden that has lovely views over the Island towards the Castle, although this can get very busy in the Summer months and at weekends.
The Manor House Hotel The Marketplace, Holy Island, Northumberland - 01289 389207
The Manor House Hotel offers food served in it's bar, restaurant and beer garden. Lunches comprise of hot and cold sandwiches, salads, snacks or full meals and there is also a full dinner menu to choose from. There are many items on the menu that use seasonal local produce with many dishes using locally caught fish and seafood.
The Ship Inn Marygate, Holy Island Northumberland - 01289 389 311
This traditional Inn was completely refurbished and renamed in 1995 and has been maintained as the Ship Inn ever since. Offering a cosy atmosphere, The Ship has a strong reputation for it's real ales and has on tap its Holy Island bitter and Secret Kingdom brewed by the award winning Hadrian & Border Brewery. Also there are seasonal changes featuring equally enjoyable guest beers from around the U.K.
Home cooked food ranges from a light lunch to a full a la carte menu in the evening, where locally caught fish and seafood is a speciality. Food can be enjoyed at the bar, in the lounge or in the large beer garden, perfect on a summers evening.
All the places highlighted above are marked on our interactive map of Holy Island. There is also a complete listing of all the places to eat and drink on Holy Island below, with links to their own websites where possible.
I have also included in the list below a couple of places that are actually on the mainland, but are very close to the causeway that leads to Holy Island. My reasons for doing this are two-fold, firstly I wanted to include them because of their quality and because what they offer is unique. Secondly because when you arrive at the causeway the crossing times may not suit exactly and you might need somewhere to sit and have a drink and a bite to eat while waiting for the tide. These two places that I highly recommend are
