St Mary's Inn St Mary’s Lane, St Mary’s Park, Morpeth, NE61 6BL - 01670 293293

From the same people that brought you the amazing Jesmond Dene House, St Mary's Inn is a real foodie find, hidden away in the Northumberland countryside.

It's easily accessible from the A1, yet far enough away to feel like you're enjoying the peace and quiet, the pub is on the site of the original St Mary's Hospital. The hospital closed in 1996 and the refurbishment into stylish country pub has been very sympathetically achieved. On to the food, we're of the opinion that they offer some of the finest grub in Northumberland and easily feature in our top ten pub meals. There's a great selection of classics (like North Sea Beer Battered Cod or the classic Aberdeen Angus Burger) and an excellent choice for the more adventurous foodie, Pigs Head Terrine was on the special board recently!

Great presentation, friendly staff and most of all top quality food make St Mary's Inn a must visit in mid-Northumberland.

Gianni's Restaurant 3 Market Place, Morpeth, Northumberland, NE61 1HG - 01670 511547This is an old family favourite of ours and we simply couldn't do a page about eating in Morpeth without mentioning them. Gianni's have been serving Italian food in Morpeth since 1986, I have wonderful memories of celebrating birthdays and special occasions here as a child and more recently enjoying pizza as an adult. It's a great place for families and the atmosphere is always comfortable in Gianni's, it's Italian owned and run which seems to be a rarity in today's restaurant world. I particularly enjoy the décor, quirkily done with Italian newspapers lining the walls and the usual colourful Italian Restaurant adornments. As friendly as the staff are, the reason we keep coming back is the food. It's tasty, home-made and best of all it's very reasonably priced with lunch time offers and early evening set price menus.

Marabini's 7 New Market, Morpeth, Nothumberland, NE61 1PS - 01670 512201

New to Morpeth's restaurant scene and causing quite a stir with locals is Marabini's. The quality of food is just as good as Gianni's so it's down to personal choice which Italian Restaurant you choose, frankly it's good to have some competition and choice. They are happy to cater for parties and children and have a wide selection of food on the menu, with lunch time and early evening offers.

Barluga Unit 3D, Sanderson Arcade, Morpeth, Northumberland, NE61 1NS - 01670 505000

One of the new additions to the eating scene in Morpeth and what a welcome addition it is! Stylish dining in a contemporary setting over two floors in the Sanderson Arcade. The food is a very high standard, the service efficient and friendly. For the modern foodie this should possibly be your first destination in Morpeth.

La Bodega Tapas 84 Newgate Street, Morpeth, NE61 1BU Unfortunately our favourite tapas restaurant has closed for the time being while they search for new premises, a great loss to the County!

The Bridge Street Inn 59 Bridge Street, Morpeth, Northumberland, NE61 1PQ - 01670 516200

Formerly well known as the Black Door Bar and Dining rooms, we're not quite sure what brought about the name change. What hasn't changed though is the quality of the bistro-style food that is on offer. You'll find the bar menu to be reasonably priced, offering an extensive choice of meals and an a la carte menu served upstairs in the more formal dining rooms. The wine list is exceptional and the feel of the place is quirky and very cosy, with a distinctly modern twist. Set price Sunday lunches are also on offer, along with special offers during the week.

The Corbridge Larder Delicatessen and Coffee Shop  Sanderson Arcade, Morpeth, Northumberland, NE61 1NS - 01670 503302

Inside the Sanderson Arcade (the jewel in Morpeth's shopping crown) you will find the recently opened Corbridge Larder. As the name suggests the company originates in Corbridge where they opened their first deli and have recently branched out to Morpeth. The Corbridge Larder stand for quality and offer a huge line of fine quality and award-winning foods from local producers. The coffee shop showcases what they sell, home-made pies, quiches, cheeses and of course a good old cup of coffee. The Larder has a wealth of produce to browse and sample and we highly recommend stopping by for a good while to explore what they have on offer. They also have an online shop where you can buy your groceries, confectionery, gifts, teas, coffees and hampers if you can't make it to the shop.

Shooters Bar 43-45 Bridge Street, Morpeth, Northumberland, NE61 1PE - 01670 510000

Shooters Bar on Bridge Street has fast become the place to go for a drink and a night out in Morpeth. It's a trendy and modern spot to enjoy a few drinks in the bar after work, or hit the town at the weekend. They're open late on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and have a good DJ and a dancefloor to boogie the night away.

Central Bean Coffee House 21 Sanderson Arcade, Morpeth, Northumberland, NE61 1NS

Set in the beautiful Sanderson Arcade, Central Bean Coffee House is a North-East business that has the tricky job of taking on the 'bog boys' of the coffee industry. They do it well with fine coffees, highly trained staff and perhaps most important these days... free wifi internet access!

Northumberland Arms The Peth, West Thirston, Felton, Northumberland, NE65 9EE 01670 787370

Recently bought by the owners of the incredibly successful Running Fox (which is located just over the bridge), the Northumberland Arms is now unrecognisable to its previous run down state. A huge amount of time, money and care have been spent returning this Coaching Inn to its former glory. The bar is welcoming and warm, with open fires and under floor heating, the welcome extends to your dog as well. The restaurant offers fantastic locally sourced food served to the highest standards while still offering good value for money. Be prepared to book ahead though, it has become so popular that the restaurant can book up weeks in advance at peak times. We certainly feel this is the best place to eat within a reasonable driving distance of Morpeth (about 10 minutes).

The Kitchen Garden at Meldon Park Meldon Park, Morpeth, Northumberland NE61 3SW - 01670 772 321

It wasn't long ago that Meldon Park was featured on Channel 4's "A Country House Rescue" and its located on the road out towards Wallington through Mitford, just 6 or 7 miles from Morpeth and the A1. The Estate really is a beautiful location for a tea room and they have certainly made the most of it, the cafe is in the warm conservatory overlooking a lovely walled garden, which visitors are free to explore. The Cafe is run by Emily Cookson who also knows how to put on a warm welcome. Prices here are quite competitive with a range of home-made light lunches, cakes, tea and coffees etc offering good value for money. I ordered a cappuccino and the bacon and sausage sandwhich which was swiftly brought out and came with a fresh side salad. For a weekday that was fast approaching Winter there were plenty of people enjoying their lunch and wandering in the garden. The gift shop as you enter to the left is also impressive, filled with festive treats and gifts - if you can't find something you like here there really is something wrong with you! They have a really good range of local crafts and produce to choose from. We always enjoy our visit the Kitchen Garden at Meldon Park and would thoroughly recommend that you stop in if you're in the area.
