Warkworth to Alnmouth
Just a mile North of Amble, a short distance inland along the river Coquet you come to the historic village of Warkworth. The coastal road here runs parallel with the river Coquet and is a prime spot for bird watchers, with herons and a whole range of bird species regularly spotted. This beautiful four mile stretch of coastline from Warkworth heading North to Alnmouth offers stunning beaches, with the villages themselves living up to their setting.
Warkworth is a beautiful, quaint old village that is almost completely surrounded by a loop in the river Coquet, making it an idyllic place to stop and relax. At one end of the village sat atop the hill is the stunning ruin of Warkworth Castle (an English Heritage site), it dominates the views for miles around. The Castle is an ancient seat of the Percy family, Earls and Dukes of Northumberland, it is now a popular venue for a whole host of events and outdoor theatre. At the other end of the village, down the hill through it's old streets sits the parish village church of St Lawrence, which has a beautiful riverside setting. In between these two imposing buildings there are many Inns, upmarket shops and galleries, gift shops and tea rooms to explore.
Moving North along the coast from Warkworth, the winding road of the coastal route offers spectacular views of the next stop along the coastal journey, Alnmouth. The village is almost picture postcard perfect with its colourful cottages, at it's best on a sunny day when the tide is out revealing the vast expanses of golden sand.
Located approximately 5 miles East of Alnwick, Alnmouth was founded in 1150 and today remains a beautiful and interesting village that is well worth exploring. There is a lovely variety of restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, gift shops and a golf course for visitors to enjoy.Â
