Alnmouth Guide

Your Guide to Alnmouth

Moving North up the Northumberland coast from Warkworth, the winding road of the coastal route offers spectacular views of the next stop along the coastal journey, Alnmouth. The village is almost picture postcard perfect with its colourful cottages, at it's best on a sunny day when the tide is out revealing the vast expanses of golden sand. Located approximately 5 miles East of Alnwick, Alnmouth was founded in 1150 and today remains a beautiful and interesting village that is well worth exploring. There is a lovely variety of restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, gift shops and a golf course for visitors to enjoy. Buy a full Guide to Alnmouth.

Getting There

Alnmouth is located on the coast just 5-10 minutes drive East of Alnwick and the A1, the road that runs through the heart of Northumberland. It can also be accessed from the North or South via the Northumberland Coastal Route, which is clearly signposted on brown tourist road signs. Postcode for your SatNav: NE66 2RJ

Parking in Alnmouth is easy, there is a large public car park right on the sea front (watch out for flying golf balls as you drive through the golf course though!) take the first left as you enter the village onto the Wynd and then your first left again as you go down the hill. The car park on the sea front is not free in the Spring and Summer season, when there is an attendant collecting at it's entrance before the golf course. Season tickets are also available if you are a regular visitor to Alnmouth, and once you've visited you will want to come back! Locals, however, tend to drive through the village past the pubs and shops and park on the road by the estuary and around to the harbour area. This road is free to park on but be warned, it gets very busy in high season! Alnmouth is also accessible by bus (click here for a service map) and by train.

Alnmouth is a stop on the Arriva "Newcastle - Morpeth - Amble - Alnwick - The Coast - Berwick" which is the service between Newcastle and Berwick on their X18 route (see link below for more information). Multi journey tickets are available and you can get more information here. There is a train station just outside the village that is on the East Coast Main Line, providing easy access from Edinburgh to the North or Morpeth and Newcastle and beyond to the South. A local taxi company that is ideally based for pick ups from Alnmouth station is The Yellow Taxi, a yellow London taxi that seats up to six people. Another taxi company that covers the area is Knights Taxis.
