Seahouses Guide

Your Guide to Seahouses

Seahouses lies on the Northumberland coast about 15 miles North-East of Alnwick between the beautiful Villages of Beadnell and Bamburgh. This holiday Town and Fishing Port did not exist until 1889 when the harbour was built in order to improve the local fishing and lime industries. Seahouses is known to many as 'The Gateway to the Farne Islands' and is a very popular place with both locals and visitors. It is probably the most popular holiday resort on the Coast due to it's excellent amenities and attracts huge numbers of visitors throughout the year.

The Town itself centres on it's harbour, where you will find fishing boats mixed with pleasure boats taking hordes of visitors over to the Farne Islands. The harbour is also known as 'North Sunderland Harbour' and if you notice on Google Maps North Sunderland actually shows as the name of the Town. Buy a full guide to Seahouses and the Farne Islands.

Getting There

Seahouses is easy to access by car and has several large car parks. If you are visiting off peak or arriving early then the best car park is right on the sea front, just off the main road. This does get full extremely quickly though and there is additional parking on the harbour wall itself and behind the public toilets and Tourist Information Centre in the Town.

Seahouses is a stop on the Arriva "Newcastle - Morpeth - Amble - Alnwick - The Coast - Berwick" which is the service between Newcastle and Berwick on their X18 route (see link below for more information). Multi journey tickets are available and you can get more information here.

Seahouses' Attractions and Things To DoSeahouses is a seaside Fishing Town through and through. It is however, perhaps most famous for being the 'Gateway to the Farne Islands' and rightly so. Visiting the Farne Islands is a must while you are in the area, assuming you don't get easily sea sick!  One of Europe's most important bird sanctuaries it is home to more than 20 different species including Puffins and terns, it is also home to massive seal colonies. It really is one of the greatest wildlife experiences on offer in the Country and comes extremely high on the list of things you really should do if you are visiting Northumberland. There are also plenty of other things to do from a base in Seahouses, from watersports and horse riding on one of the beautiful wide sandy beaches to Fishing, golf (including crazy golf!) and bird watching. Restaurants, Pubs and Cafes - Eating Out In Seahouses

Seahouses has an excellent choice of places to eat for such a small town. For me there is nothing better than getting some fish and chips and eating them while sitting and watching the activity in the harbour. If the weather is bad it's nice to sit and eat them in the car if you can get parked in the main car park overlooking the sea. It's particularly nice here when there is a rough sea to watch. With the Town being on the coast and having such a busy harbour there is an emphasis on fish on a lot of the local menus. This is understandable as the quality is excellent and there is always a fresh supply. There is a good variety of other places including from good old British Pub grub to Indian food and the ever popular Fish and Chip restaurants and takeaways. Beaches There are glorious beaches to the North and to the South of the Town, with most popular being to the North of the harbour. This wide sandy beach, backed by golden sand dunes has the glorious back drop of Bamburgh Castle. It is perfect for a family day out at the beach with the amenities of Seahouses close by. The Good Beach Guide rates this beach as recommended for the highest UK standard of water quality for bathing.

This stretch of beach is very popular with people staying in Seahouses and it's easy to see why. It's just a short walk from the Town over the sand dunes. The beach is popular with windsurfers, kite surfers and surfers when there is a good swell.

Shopping and Supermarkets

There are many gift shops in Seahouses, undoubtedly the biggest and the best is the Farne Gift Shop in the centre of the town (6-8 Seafield Road, Seahouses). We know this shop as 'the shop that sells everything' and you'll have to visit to find out why! I don't think we have ever left without buying a basketful of useful things, it really is a gem!

The vast majority of Seahouses' shops are on Main Street, they include:

TT Cuthbertson Newsagents, Co-op Food, Trotters Family Bakers, Newton's Electrical Appliances, Chemist, Newsagent and Off License, Butterflies and Dreams Gift Shop, Polka Dot Gift Shop, Amusements, Raggy Dolls, National Trust Shop, The Pet Shop, Bit-a-Sweet (a retro sweet shop) and the Sue Ryder Charity Shop.

Food shops include the Co-operative on Main Street and Trotters Family Bakers. There is also a Fish Shop near the harbour called Swallow Fish of Seahouses, it is located at 2 South Street and they offer superb quality fresh fish and seafood. For larger supermarkets visit Alnwick, here you will find a Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Iceland, Lidl and Co-op along with numerous independent Butchers, Bakers and other shops selling excellent quality local produce.
