Traditionally a quiet month, after the madness of the Christmas and New Year party season, January is still an exciting month to get out and explore Northumberland. It's definitely a case of wrapping up warm and staying safe though, with the temperatures plummeting you'll need a lot of layers to brave the stunning Northumberland coast and countryside. But what reward there is on offer! The crisp, clear winter days offer outstanding views whether in the hills or by the beach. Thankfully it's not all outdoor activities, for those who feel the cold there are fascinating events and things to do running throughout the County:
Events and What's On in January
Northumberland has some of the darkest skies in the whole Country and the viewing season is in full swing throughout January at the Kielder Observatory. The staff are eager to introduce you to the some of the universal splendours including observing from Jupitus to Uranus, gas clouds to quantum physics and maybe even the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). It's one of Northumberland's top attractions according to Trip Advisor and it's the perfect educational and exciting trip for the whole family. Throughout January their events include Public Observations where you can use the incredibly powerful equipment (under supervision) to explore and observe some of the most incredible objects in our universe. Live Music
Regular monthly live music takes place in January in the form of Rothbury Roots on Thursday 31st January at the Queens Head in Rothbury and Saturday 19th January at Netherton Folk Club. There's more Folk on Friday 25th January at Woodhorn Museum near Ashington with Thank Folk It's Friday.
Cinema and the Arts
Northumberland's Arts Centres and Cinemas offer an excellent choice and range of theatre and film. If the weather is bad, or just too cold to tackle, why not stay indoors and enjoy some culture or a film. The Maltings in Berwick, Alnwick Playhouse, Queen's Hall Arts Centre in Hexham, The Forum Cinema in Hexham, The Phoenix Theatre in Blyth.
