Towards the end of May the Azaleas give way to the many thousands of Rhodedendrons at Cragside House, Gardens and Estate and continue to bloom well into June (pictured right). It is a quite astounding display of colour and the sheer magnitude of the estate can't fail to impress. Howick Hall Gardens was voted by the Independent as one of the top ten gardens to visit in Spring and it is no wonder! Come May the Rhododendrons take centre stage within the woodland, but it is hard to overlook the striking azure blue of the Himalayan Poppies: Meconopis betonicifolia; those hard to establish little beauties whose plants flower, set seed and then die never to reappear unless the knowledgeable gardener, has provided the perfect moist, cool conditions required for the new seeds to germinate. The Cherry Orchard at The Alnwick Garden is the largest of its kind in the world and is one of The Garden's most tranquil areas, with winding pathways and over 300 graceful Japanese Tai Haku cherry trees. The trees are underplanted with 600,000 pink 'Mistress' tulips, and pathways meander amongst them, with colourful azalea borders planted at the Orchard’s edge.Bank Holiday Weekend HighlightsThe Bellingham All Accoustic Music Festival takes place from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th May and with around 100 performers taking part there should be something for everyone!
